Beware of these new crypto scams
Last Updated on 6 November 2023 by CryptoTips.eu
This weekend, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin’s social media account got hacked (a scam ensued) and on Friday a post went round making everyone believe they could get free coins from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust.
In all, two new scams during a time that Bitcoin is still moving very calmly. So, continuing to pay attention remains the main message for all crypto fans.
Vitalik
Taking over the social media accounts of celebrities and then getting followers to click on a link is a crypto scam that has been around for several years. As Vitalik Buterin is a true legend in the world of crypto, being the founder of Ethereum and all, it was only a matter of time before his account also got hacked of course. This weekend it happened.
Anyone can fall victim to phishing scam no matter the knowledge you have.

Vitalik's account was hacked most
likely by a sim swap attack leading to a
wallet drainer⚠️
Over $600k was drained from
victims wallets.

It is currently unclear who exactly took over Vitalik Buterin’s account (rumors say it took place via a so-called SIM swap) but what has become apparent already is that some $800,000 was stolen from his followers.

$800k+ has been drained so far!
In the hack, we just lost an iconic NFT.
It wasn't a normal punk; we lost the first publicly-claimed punk, essentially the very first NFT ever minted.

Grayscale
A second scam happened due to the popularity of a recent news story.
Just last week, Grayscale won a major lawsuit against the SEC over the possible launch of a Bitcoin ETF (exchange traded fund). As many people interested in crypto had read that, hackers understood that they could do something with the name Grayscale.
A fake account named just like the real Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, and a blue checkmark purchased made it a very successful scam.

The world of crypto and Bitcoin may be quiet right now in terms of volatility, but fans should always be on the lookout for scammers.
