The massive protests in Nigeria we reported on earlier this week have by now made headlines all around the world. The SARS protests as they are known, are a way for the Nigerian youth to express their outrage over the apparent excessive use of force by the police’s Special Anti-robbery Squad (or SARS). After Twitter’s Jack Dorsey already highlighted their plight a few weeks ago, many other celebrities have now also joined in condemning police brutality in Nigeria.

The Bitcoin crowdfunded protests organized by several youth organizations in the country have welcomed the celebrities that have since spoken out in favor of their actions.

At first, it was the daily show host Trevor Noah who highlighted the item, saying on his show that the police brutality must end. Rappers Kanye West and Nicki Minaj also spoke of their support for the movement and many called for further donations to the Bitcoin fund set up by Feminist Coalition.

By now, the organization has raised several cryptocurrencies worth some $126,000.

And then global superstar Beyoncé also chimed in, but her message was not too well received. Beyonce stated:

I am heartbroken to see the senseless brutality taking place in Nigeria. There has to be an end to SARS. We have been working on partnerships with youth organisations to support those protesting for change. We are collaborating with coalitions to provide emergency healthcare, food and shelter. To our Nigerian sisters and brothers, we stand by you.

Young Nigerians were not impressed though, claiming that Beyoncé clearly doesn’t know what is happening in their country.

Local entrepreneur Mercy Ehimare summed up the mood when he said:

Can somebody tell this woman we are not hungry??????? We need support to fight for our existence.
