‘Memecoins’ are one of the new words which will makes it to the 2021 ‘shortlist’, unfortunately a year that will go down as just another one in a multi-year pandemic. The three memecoins that have been in focus lately are all centered around a Shiba Inu dog. The original was called Dogecoin, its famous competitor is Shiba Inu and now Floki Inu, named after Elon Musk’s new puppy, is trying to rise to fame as well.
Shiba suffers
Shiba Inu has not been having the best of times ever since it entered the CoinMarketCap top 10.
This does look like a top though. $SHIB top buyers RIP. pic.twitter.com/e6Ndbhpimv

Analyst Alex Krüger pointed out this week that the declining searches for the term Shiba Inu coincided with its price drop as of late. Not sure if Shiba can reclaim that all-time-high any time soon. In the past seven days though, it managed to stay afloat and even saw a serious uptick yesterday. Unsure of where it will end the year, but clearly one of the stars of 2021.
Floki Inu sponsors football
Newcomer in the memecoins is Floki Inu, which is under investigation in the UK for aggressive marketing techniques in order to make the public aware of it’s existence. This didn’t stop Floki from announcing a deal with Italian football club Napoli this week.

We like to define Floki as the cryptocurrency of the people,” the coin’s marketing team declared. “In our plans to be the most known and most used cryptocurrency in the world, SSC Napoli will represent a key asset, given that the club is a global brand with an amazing history together with a fantastic fanbase. We can’t wait to start working with them and support SSC Napoli on the pitch thanks to our logo’s presence on the playing jersey.
The Southern Italian sports team is currently leading the local Serie A and Floki Inu is therefore guaranteed to get some screen time. We will have to wait and see how those investigations in the British Isles turn out and how Floki Inu will perform in 2022.
Ripple CEO blasts Dogecoin
Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, slammed Dogecoin on a CNBC panel this week as not having its place in the cryptosphere. Garlinghouse stated:
It was built as a joke, then it got some momentum from some high-profile people like Elon Musk.
Dogecoin has some inflationary dynamics itself that would make me reluctant to hold it.
He added.
He’s not the only one with this opinion. Many of the major crypto personalities feel that memecoins have no place at the crypto table and simply take away attention from Bitcoin and Ether. The general public is enthusiastic though. Dogecoin was the most searched after crypto in 2021 in the US on search engines.
