FTX founder surprised prison was nothing like ‘Shawshank Redemption’

Sam Bankman-Fried, the famous founder of the bankrupt crypto platform FTX, has been doing what someone with multiple lawsuits against should not actually do, namely giving a lot of interviews. If you remember, a week before his arrest in the Bahamas, he gave a lengthy interview to the New York Times that left many on crypto-twitter screaming in amazement that it was time for SBF to be arrested (Michael van de Poppe was one of them). A day later it indeed happened.

Now that he is in pre-trial detention in the United States, which he is allowed to serve at home with his parent after paying a $ 250 million bail, Sam continues to string the interviews together. Not a good look.

Shawshank

For example, the American press this weekend could not stop snickering as Sam complained about the living conditions in the prison in the Bahamas, where he had to spend a few days before being transferred to the US.

“I thought that it was going to be like The Shawshank Redemption,” said the former billionaire, who was raised in Palo Alto, California, a city where the average home sells for $3.4 million.

Shawshank redemption is of course a reference to the famous prison film with Morgan Freeman that won 7 Oscars. In the story, a banker is wrongly accused and escapes. Easy to spot why Sam would point out that film of course.

Sam also thought that prison life was “harsh due to overcrowding, poor nutrition, and inadequate sanitation, ventilation, and medical care.”

His trial is coming up, and it’s clear that many Americans will be watching as this celebrity scandal (NFL star Tom Brady and other celebrities have also been charged and will have to testify) is televised.
