Futurama’s newest episode is all about Bitcoin and crypto

Last Updated on 6 November 2023 by CryptoTips.eu

Pop culture has been covering the appetite of young Americans for Bitcoin and crypto at length already. The latest one to jump on the bandwagon is the popular cartoon series Futurama, which built a full episode around it. The Simpsons and South Park have already focused on crypto before.

This time a parody was made of the well-known ‘gold rush’ that attracted many Americans to the West (aka California) hundreds of years ago, to search for gold. This time round they came for Bitcoin of course. The episode is packed with crypto references.

Doge city

Futurama is made by the team responsible for The Simpsons and was once proposed as its successor. It never came to that (The Simpsons is still going strong), but Futurama has also found a public and is already twenty years old. This week, the third episode of the last season was released to viewers in the United States, and it was all about Bitcoin mining (or at least something like it).

In the Wild West (which is now called ‘crypto-country’) there is a village called ‘Doge city’ (an obvious reference to Dogecoin instead of the more famous ‘Dodge city’ that appears in many Western movies) where Bitcoins are mined. Robot Bender, one of the main characters of the series, is looking for Bitcoins. This is because the price of Bitcoin first crashed and then surged.

The other characters Philip and Leela eventually find him in the back room of a saloon where he is mining Bitcoins together with other robots.

The episode is full of references to blockchain and crypto, so it is yet more proof that crypto is very popular with the younger generation of Americans who watch television or stream series.

Simpsons predict value Bitcoin

It has been clear for some time that the creators of the Simpsons and Futurama are big crypto fans. Two years ago there was an episode of the Simpsons called Burger Kings in which they predicted the future value of Bitcoin, Tesla and Gamestop.

Lastly, a screenshot of the Simpsons showing the future value of the cryptocurrency XRP ($589, although that seems very far-fetched to us) is still legendary on the internet.
