Fangirling, the term popularized thanks to the launch of K-pop boybands and teenage girls’ reaction to them, has gone mainstream since a few years. The K-stans (or the K-Pop stans), the group of people that tweet or post on social media about K-Pop, is a serious movement on the internet, much larger than the WallStreetBets Reddit numbers in fact.

The term can now also be used to portray someone whose completely changed his opinion on a certain fact, good or theory. As such, we have to say that billionaire Mark Cuban has gone from crypto critic to a serious fangirl in 2021.

No more banana but AAVE

Long gone seem the days when Shark Tank star Cuban explained that he preferred a banana over Bitcoin as he could at least eat the piece of fruit. By now, it looks like Cuban’s 8 million followers on Twitter get informed about the cryptosphere every few days or so.

That can either be in the form of advice on Dogecoin, why Ethereum is better than Bitcoin or why one should invest in NFT art. According to the Dallas Mavericks owner, DeFi and smart contracts are a game changer to which classic finance has not found an answer so for. Because of this, he recently admitted that:

Ethereum has an advantage over Bitcoin for regular people.

He has become so used to using crypto by now that when his crypto wallet was recently revealed, it looked like Mr Cuban was mostly staking AAVE (and making good money).

GameStop and a New York Times podcast

In the past month, Cuban was quick to spot an opportunity when he chose to side with the Reddit crowd in the Gamestop versus Wall Street saga. The 7 million iGeneration youngsters that make up the WallStreetBets forum were treated to an AMA and during a very popular New York Times podcast (Sway with Kara Swisher) at the beginning of the month.

Cuban explained to a crowd of millions that the duel between a group of investors and Wall Street would probably change the face of finance for years to come.

2024 – Chamath, Elon and Mark?

As such, the American billionaire investor has clearly sided with the cool kids in class as of late, namely Chamath Palihapitiya and Elon Musk.

It is also possible that Cuban sticks close to the advice and heading of those two as he knows they are clearly crowd favorites with the people he needs on his side for a possible 2024 Presidential Run. As a reminder, Cuban jokingly admitted to Chamath that he would indeed run if Bitcoin reaches a valuation of 1 million dollars.
