NFT could well become the next big thing next to DeFi as a side-industry that will lift the cryptosphere to a higher level.

This weekend this was shown again as Nyan Cat, the 10 year-old viral meme of the cat flying through space with a rainbow tail behind her, sold at online auction for 300 Ether. At the time of writing some $550,000. Not bad for a meme made on a simple home computer.

The world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), unique digital items authenticated on the blockchain, is quite hot right now. A few weeks ago, even Dallas Mavericks own and current crypto fan Mark Cuban started selling them. Even the creator of Rick and Morty got in on the hype a few weeks ago.

Online auction

Artists who are the proud creators or owners of a meme that went viral can in this manner earn thousands of dollars.

Chris Torres, who created the meme 10 years ago in honor of his own cat who had “crossed the rainbow bridge” as he described it, couldn’t believe how easy it was.

I am still relatively new to crypto in general, but I see its full potential.

I’m very surprised with the success, but I think I’m most glad knowing that I’ve basically opened the door to a whole new meme economy in the crypto world.

Torres said.

The online auction which was open for 24 hours started seeing bids roll in as from 3 ETH and finally ended with one hundred times the opening bid.

Real Housewives

Perhaps I’m just letting my imagination run wild here but already now I wonder how much the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills screaming to a cat is gonna go for.

I mean, I have seen that thing pass by on the internet so many times by now that the original poster of that meme has got to be thinking about selling it as an NFT.
