OpenAI CEO starts crypto company that wants to scan your eyes

There are those science-fiction movies which didn’t do well at the box office, but which have been instrumental in introducing new ideas to the general public. Back in 1993 there was Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock. That one is now 30 years old. It talked about a world in which meat, alcohol and sugar were forbidden and where sex only happened virtually in order not to spread diseases. You were also fined for insulting anyone and weapons were completely prohibited. Sounded really weird then, maybe a little less now.

Another was Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report with Tom Cruise from 2002, more than twenty years old now. In it, people walking into a shopping center and were scanned through their eyes. Then central computer was then able to display personal advertisements. When you hear that now, you realize where many Silicon Valley tech companies got their ideas.

Open AI (the company behind ChatGPT) CEO Sam Altman is also one of those who clearly saw Minority Report. He is therefore, together with some colleagues, starting a crypto company called Worldcoin project, which will specialize in digital identification.

Orb

Their token, called Worldcoin, will focus on developing the World ID system, which will allow you to enter the application to trade cryptocurrencies through, you guessed it, a scan of your eyes. Worldcoin hopes that the technology will then be sold to other companies that find it necessary to know if someone is a bot on the internet or a real human being.

The device that will perform the scan is called the ‘Orb’, which was also the name of a 1990s ambient group that made some rather weird future predictions. Their first hit was one about an AI that controlled the world from the center of the Earth.

The AI-related coins such as Render token and Singularity.Net will soon have another competitor. During the first funding round, it turned out that there were many interested parties in the project. Altman’s new company quickly raised $115 million.
