For the second time in a few months, Donald Trump promised that he would release Ross Ulbricht (who has been in prison since 2013) if he is elected president. The crypto world is reacting positively to the news.
Political promises
Ross Ulbricht enters his twelfth year in prison this week and wrote about it on social media. Former President Donald Trump responded that he would release Ross on day 1 of entering the White House next year. Big news if true of course.

In addition to the political aspect (which of course plays a role given the popularity of crypto among young voters in the United States), Ross Ulbricht’s story naturally strikes a chord in the Bitcoin world.
Ross was sentenced to life in prison for founding Silk Road, a website where you could buy all kinds of illegal items as from 2011 and pay for them in Bitcoin. The site quickly became world famous.
Anonymous
Silk Road was the first real example of the large-scale use of crypto, but it also highlighted the inherent risks of the anonymity that crypto assets offer.
It also showed how dangerous Bitcoin is for the established financial order, which could easily be circumvented in this way. With Silk Road you didn’t need dollars or a bank card, just a crypto wallet and an email address. At that time you could still create both those things anonymously, hence shopping anonymously for drugs and other things was a piece of cake.
It is by now generally accepted that the harsh punishment Ross received was mostly done to set an example for anyone who would set up such a website again.

Back in May, Trump also promised to release Ross next year.
