Every year, business magazines like Forbes and Fortune produce a list of the world’s billionaires, mostly featuring Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Elon Musk of Tesla and Bill Gates of Microsoft.

The same names are always returning, and this year, as Tesla stock soared to new heights in January, Musk overtook the spot of Bezos for a short moment.

People tend to read these lists as billionaires are both loathed and revered at the same time. The greater public hates the rich and powerful and at the same time is bemused by them. As such, it will be interesting to see whether Forbes and Fortune will allow the anonymous Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto to feature in their list soon.

At the latest published version, the top ten was closed out by Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle who has an estimated net worth of $86.6 billion.

1.1 million Bitcoin

If Bitcoin however keeps rising at the rate that it’s going, then the illustrious Satoshi could soon enter that space as well.

From the court case of last year in which Australian businessman Craig Wright tried to convince the world he was the mysterious Bitcoin creator, we learned that Satoshi owns the keys to the first 1.1 million Bitcoins ever mined. At today’s price of around $56k, that means some $61 billion dollars in wealth.

Not enough to make the top 10 just yet, but getting there nevertheless.

The more interesting thing is that Bloomberg’s senior commodity strategist this week admitted that Bitcoin could cross $400k by the end of 2021. If that happens, Bezos and Musk will have a lot of catching up to do to get to Satoshi’s level of course, because at that rate he would become the richest person on earth, with some serious headway over the others in fact (even if they grow their fortune at the normal rate).
